Humble apologies planet earth
I vow to do better but not for now...
Second day of NoPlasticJuly month.
I pledged to eliminate clam shell lettuce containers and so far so good. I avoid chastising people except for single use plastic water bottles. I go big on that. But today I sit in my little confessional.
Enter sick Arlo Smallz our cat we’re hand feeding his nibbles, then saving his unconsumed portions. Ordinarily I put that one leftover in a reusable plastic or glass containers but desperate times are calling for desperate measures. Given the soft food, human food, cream treats, yogurt, I have used more single use plastic baggies in the past 3 weeks than the past 6 months. I have taken to putting his favorite cute little cat shaped food dish holding his left over food in a baggie in the refrigerator seizing every crucial ‘I’m ready to eat’ moment.
Topping off my July challenge ant season arrived in our house. Those unfamiliar with the midwest think only of midwest mosquitoes which aren’t bad as rumor has it. In our house we have ant season and gnat season. Currently it’s ant season.
I googled— ants know to find warm and dry areas when it’s hot, humid and ripe for storms. Storms we have had! I’ve always wondered what purpose ants serve in our eco system. Now I know they are precursors to storms.
Yes, I’ve been cleaning like a fiend but they discovered the sweetness of the honey cap and the mostly but not fully closed container of simple syrup. My pantry is plastic bag heaven. Sorry planet earth. I pledge to do better soon, one day, someday.
Epilogue- 10 days post…ant season handled, Arlo eating better. Back to normal practices. As we can tend to judge others from the lens we look through, this little foray of plastic frenzy has given me pause. We don’t know why someone has made their choice unless we ask. I think I’ll try it.

Going plastic-less is way, way more challenging that one realizes until they try to do it. All any of us can do is our best and try to show grace when someone makes different choices than we do. That grace part is harder than weaning from plastics. Also prolly just as important.
All is forgiven if Arlo is improving!
